MAUI, Hawaii — The 2013 PGA Tour season kicks off this week at Kapalua Golf Resort in Maui, Hawaii and marks a new beginning for the TaylorMade Tour Staff professionals competing in the exclusive, winners-only field of 30. As quickly as the off-season came and went, the 2012 Champions flying west for the New Year have a serious opportunity to build momentum for the season ahead on a shortened leaderboard.
From new player signings to product introductions and testing, there are no shortage of storylines the first week of the year in professional golf, but the HTOC once again takes center stage for the guys who’ve earned their way into the field with a victory. Among those competing this week are TaylorMade Staffers Dustin Johnson (FedEx St. Jude Classic) and Johnson Wagner (Sony Open), who will be joined at Kapalua by a couple of fresh faces under TaylorMade hats (more on that Wednesday).
Although most of the field spent a quiet New Year’s Day away from the course in Hawaii, Wagner joined a handful of players bouncing around the Kapalua practice facility and golf course today gearing up for his first 18 of 2013. The HTOC scheduling is unique this year as the tournament starts Friday and culminates in a Monday finish before players ship over to the big island for next week’s Sony Open.
Finally, one of the highlights Tuesday was the debut of the 2013 R1 staff bag, as Wagner zipped around the long, undulating Kapalua layout on a cart with his caddy, his new bag in tow.
There’s a lot more to come this week from Kapalua. Stay tuned to TaylorMade Tour Diaries for live updates from Maui leading up to first tee time on Friday.
