Honolulu, HAWAII — It didn’t take long for TaylorMade’s new R1 driver to become the No. 1 model on the PGA Tour. In just the second event of the 2013 season and first full-field tournament of the New Year, 21 players tackled the tee boxes in Honolulu with the R1 – more than any other driver model.

Facing a healthy breeze at Waialae Country Club throughout the weekend at the Sony Open, where driving accuracy proved paramount for those trying to climb a relentless leaderboard, none proved more effective with the R1 in his hands than TaylorMade Tour Staff professional Pat Perez. Just days after switching to the R1, Perez (who’s bag is pictured above) charged to four sub-70 rounds at Waialae including a masterful second-round 63, finishing the tournament with a total of 266 (-14), good for a T9 finish.

Perez, who’s taking a fresher, more confident and happier mindset into 2013,  is just one of the players who found immediate success after putting the R1 in the bag. Fellow TaylorMade Tour Staff professional Josh Teater also made the switch to the R1 at Sony, battling his way above the cut line on Friday before cruising to back-to-back 65’s on the weekend, the red-hot finish propelling him to a tie for 15th at Sony.

Both players will carry the early momentum back to the mainland this week as they prepare to take on the first leg of the West Coast Swing, the Humana Challenge in Palm Desert, California. Formerly the Bob Hope Classic, it’s an event where Perez – the 2009 Champion – has a proven track record for success and the top-10 start at Sony is sure to give him an added shot of confidence that his new attitude, and his new equipment, are working well together.

As for the week ahead, the Humana Challenge not only hosts the second full field of the 2013 PGA Tour season, it also marks the debut of the TaylorMade Tour truck, which begins its 45-week journey around the country on Monday at PGA West. That said, we’re expecting an especially busy week of new R1 driver builds and look forward to getting even more players tuned in with the new look of performance before Thursday’s opening round.

From product testing on the range to new R1 driver settings and an exclusive first-look inside the TaylorMade truck, be sure and check back with Tour Diaries throughout the week as we’ll be on the ground at the Humana Challenge.
